Where It All Started

Keith converts the former Grapes Inn at 121 Borough High Street into the first St Christopher’s Inn. A place to stay above your favourite bar. That formula has never changed.

Borough Gets Bigger

1999. A second hostel, just minutes from where it all started. London Bridge became the largest St Christopher’s to date, built on the site of a pub that had stood since the 1800s.

Beyond London

In 2001 St Christopher’s opened in Edinburgh, its first home outside London. Newquay followed. Then Amsterdam and Bruges. Four new cities, four new bars, and the same feeling every time you walked through the door.

Into Europe

Berlin Alexanderplatz in 2006, inside a building that had housed travellers before we ever arrived. Then Paris in 2008, where architects Chaix et Morel rebuilt a fire-damaged 19th century warehouse on the Canal de la Villette from its original blueprints. That same year, Amsterdam’s Flying Pig hostels, two of the most respected backpacker addresses in Europe, became part of the family.

Thirty Years On

Family-run since the beginning, with a real bar downstairs at every St Christopher’s property. Safe, fun, secure and great value. Thirty years in and the original idea has never felt more right.

Our Story

St Christopher’s

A family business since 1958

Ron Knowles opened his first off-licence in Battersea in 1958. His son Keith took over in 1982, built Belushi’s in Covent Garden, then had a thought that would change hostel accommodation across Europe. What if the people drinking downstairs could sleep upstairs too?

Three decades on, the Beds and Bars family spans nine European cities: London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Bruges, Vienna and Newquay, with 3,308 beds across 16 properties. Every St Christopher’s hostel still has a real bar downstairs. The kind of bar worth going out for, without going anywhere at all.
